We all know that healthy teeth and gums are crucial for a great smile, but did you realize that good oral habits can also affect other aspects of your health?
In fact, an increasing body of evidence suggests that gum disease could act as a sort of early warning signal for other problems.
Sally Cram, consumer adviser for the American Dental Association, told the Californian that “a lot of research studies” are emerging that suggest a link between oral infections and systemic disorders.
For example, earlier this month, researchers at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health concluded that periodontal disease could be a predictor of the onset of type 2 diabetes.
Gum disease has also been linked to cardiovascular problems, kidney disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease and some cancers.
Although more research needs to be carried out to precisely determine the cause of the association, experts have suggested that the findings emphasize the importance of regular dental check-ups to catch any problems before they progress further.
