While the American Dental Association advises that you should brush your teeth at least twice a day in order to remove plaque and avoid tooth decay, the question of how regularly you should brush your teeth still remains a source of debate among dental professionals across the world that remain unable to form a consensus.
They do agree however, that the best times of the day to brush are after breakfast in the morning and right before going to bed at night. This is to ensure that the plaque that has built up during the long day from acidic drinks, food consumption and environmental influences does not have a chance to attack your tooth enamel whilst you are asleep at night.
Experts advise that, when brushing, it is best to use a correctly sized toothbrush with relatively soft bristles. Use back and forth strokes to brush the entire surface area of each tooth and don’t forget to use the brush on your tongue in order to keep your breath fresh and your mouth free from bacteria.
Experts and spokes people from toothpaste brand Colgate advise that correct brushing should take at least two minutes, but the majority of adults don’t give their teeth nearly half as much time and attention as they require. Using a stopwatch for a few days should give you a reasonable idea as to how long you should spend brushing; two minutes is a lot longer than you might have expected. It is also important to remember that your toothbrush should be replaced regularly. It should be replaced when it begins to look worn or every three months, whichever happens to come first. You should also replace a brush after a cold or flu as it may carry germs and thus pose the possibility of re-infection.

Brushing your teeth regularly and thoroughly is a vital aspect of maintaining good oral health and hygiene. Failure to brush can lead to cavities, bad breath, discoloration of teeth, gum disease and tooth loss. All of these things are linked to more serious health problems, not to mention the financial pressure that dental problems can exert on individuals and people with families. While it is important to have a financial dental plan to deal with unexpected dental emergencies, one should try to prevent avoidable dental issues by following the advice of dental experts.
Obviously the regularity with which you should brush your teeth is affected by your general consumption of sugary foods and acidic and abrasive substances. Exercising your own judgement is a big part of dental hygiene. As a general rule, brushing two or three times a day is probably sufficient under average circumstances. If you become aware that there is a larger than normal build up of plaque on your teeth despite regular brushing, don’t hesitate to contact a dental physician as it may be symptomatic of a more complex dental hygiene problem that will require more specialist treatment.
