Dental health experts agree that flossing the teeth is one of the most effective ways of preventing gum disease and maintaining a beautiful smile.
Flossing every day helps remove plaque and food particles that can result in gingivitis, tooth decay and bad breath.

And a recent study published in the Journal of Periodontology found that regular flossing can significantly reduce the level of harmful bacteria found in the mouth, regardless of genetics.
According to the American Dental Hygienists Association, a proper flossing technique involves encircling approximately 18 inches of floss around the middle fingers of both hands, then pinching it between the thumbs and index fingers so that one or two inches are exposed.
The thumbs should be used to control the movement of the floss between the upper teeth, while the index fingers can guide it between the lower teeth.
Floss should be glided up and down against the surface of each tooth and also wrapped around the sides. It should also reach under the gum line to remove plaque.
If you encounter difficulties with reaching certain areas of the mouth, there are options such as a floss fork that may make the process easier.
