Once upon a time the only teeth you had to worry about were your own. Straight, crooked, clean or stained, cavities or none, they were your teeth and you were the only person who had to deal with the misery if you made a bad choice about dental care.
But now you have a family, and it’s not just you. Your spouse, and even more important, your children, will have to live with your choices for them. It’s one thing to choose second best for yourself. It is another to choose second best for your family.
How are you planning to ensure the best dental care for your family? Do you have a dental health plan through your employer? If so you are among the lucky, and you should make the very best use of that insurance. Be certain your spouse and children visit often, and are given the best preventive and maintenance treatments: their lives will be altered immeasurably by the health of their teeth and gums. Children’s health can be altered for life by bad dentistry, or poor dental care.
If you do not have a plan through your employer, it is time to consider getting a family dental plan on your own. There are two primary approaches: PPOs, which are managed dental health care plans (the dental equivalent of HMOs), and indemnity plans, which allow far more individual choice, but also tend to have higher premiums.
Indemnity plans, however, are more likely to permit various forms of cosmetic dentistry, which can be a great help when you have children who need orthodontic treatments or minor cosmetic work…such as repairs for a tooth chipped at a football game!
If you know that you are likely to need cosmetic dentistry, if, for example, you know your spouse and you both spent a large part of your teens in braces and retainers, then be sure to give very serious thought to getting some form of supplement that will cover such costs.
Your family will have so many challenges facing it: all families do. The joy and the hardship go together, and your life will be full to the brim with everything a marriage and children can bring you. Isn’t it better, for you and your family, to plan for their dental health now, before it becomes a major issue?
Work things through, do your research, and then live in the comfort and certainty that comes from knowing that from the first tooth breaking through your child’s gums, to your spouse’s first need for a bridge, you are all taken care of.
Choosing an affordable, discount dental plan will keep you and your family smiling!
