How do I Choose a Dentist?

Selecting a dentist to suit your needs should be a relatively straightforward process. To start off, do exactly that- choose your dentist according to your dental needs and requirements. Do you have any specific dental issues or problems? Are you interested in cosmetic dentistry? Are you using dental insurance or a dental plan?

Generally, it is said that the best place to begin your search is by talking to family and friends. They might have a dentist that they are particularly impressed by or with whom they have had a positive experience. Most people see a general/family dentist- a general dentist is not a specialized practitioner but is qualified and licensed to diagnose and treat oral conditions and dental disease. When or if it becomes necessary, a general dentist may refer you to someone more qualified in a particular area of dentistry, as they do not have the skills or expertise to carry out certain procedures.

Be sure to take into account the length and quality of a dentist’s training and clinical experience. Make perfectly clear that he or she has the necessary qualifications to be recognised by the ADA – The American Dental Association – and don’t be afraid to ask about professional dental societies that your dentist may participate in. Some organizations and/or societies require that their members continue to learn throughout their career in dentistry, taking classes to maintain their awareness of new procedures and technological advancements.

There are of course, more obvious practical issues to consider. For example, does your dentist’s surgery offer sufficient emergency care? Will a dentist always be on hand on evenings and weekends? Is the surgery relatively near to you home or place of work? If you are facing multiple procedures or a long treatment plan, the last thing you need is for travelling to be an issue as this can lead to massive inconvenience and added, unnecessary expenditure.

It is important to determine the exact costs of the dental care you will be receiving from a new dentist as hidden or unforeseen costs soon add up. Remember to include anaesthesia fees and fees for using the facility. A good and reputable dentist will outline and provide an explanation for all costs prior to the commencement of any treatment or procedure. The entirety of your cost should be determined during your initial consultation with any physician- the failure to mention cost should signal a red flag for you as a potential patient.

On a side note, choosing a dentist is a much more systematic process if you happen to find yourself saving money by way of a dental plan. With a dental plan, you are provided with a list of qualified practitioners that are happy to accept patients within the context of a particular plan. Not only does this mean that you can visit any dentist within the plan at a reduced rate, it also allows you the freedom to, effectively, shop around for your perfect doctor. Use our dental plan dentist search feature to find a qualified dentist in your area.
