Can Poor Dental Hygiene Lead to More Serious Health Problems?

People often find it surprising that improper or insufficient oral hygiene can lead to much more serious health problems. They are sometimes unaware that not only does bad dental health affect your appearance and sense of general well-being, it also has the potential to cause serious infections in the mouth such as gum disease and can contribute to conditions such as heart disease, respiratory disease and diabetes.

Gum disease, for example, can cause an inflammation of the gum area and can even affect the bone that supports your teeth. If symptoms such as these are ignored or left untreated, teeth can begin to fall out. It can also lead to more chronic problems such as respiratory disease if the bacteria from the plaque travels from the mouth to the lungs, causing infection. A link has also been established between gum disease and diabetes. People with diabetes are significantly more likely to contract gum disease as a result of bad dental hygiene and this can cause serious complications in their condition.

Adequate dental hygiene can prevent the developments of cavities and gum disease, and is also important in order to avoid sleeping problems and behavioral development issues in young children. If you practice bad dental hygiene, you may find it difficult to chew or even digest food effectively as your gums can become weak and inflamed.

The maintenance of dental health is important at all ages and stages of life, so it is vital that you make sure that you have access to relatively inexpensive dental care by way of something like a dental plan. Despite the higher risk of complications from poor oral health as a result of dependence on others and general frailty, older people are keeping their teeth longer than ever before as a benefit of improved dental care.

Minimizing the possibility of oral health problems is relatively easy- it is as simple as factoring good habits into your life. Brush and floss your teeth on a daily basis and use and anti-bacterial mouthwash. Eat a healthy and well-rounded diet and avoid smoking as it is a major risk factor for oral and dental diseases. Be sure to brush small children’s teeth up until they become capable of doing it themselves. If you are pregnant, it is also important to look after your oral health as women with poor dental hygiene are at a much higher risk of delivering pre-term and having babies with low birth weights. Babies in such weakened conditions are prone to contract asthma, infections of the ear, birth abnormalities, have developmental complications and are even at a higher risk of infant death.

Safety and prevention is the best policy as far as dental hygiene goes. Looking after your teeth does not take a lot of time or effort and is, effectively, a great investment for the future. Do not put yourself at risk through improper hygiene, it’s such a small inconvenience for such a massive gain.

My fear of the dentist has caused my teeth to fall into a terrible state.

Unfortunately, as a result of that I am on a four weeklong regimine of multiple daily antibiotic infusions via PICC line for bacterial endocarditis.

And still I don’t know how I will drag myself to a dentist after this :(
