An evening ritual for many people is brushing their teeth and rinsing with mouthwash. These people realize that clean teeth are healthier teeth. The Journal of Periodontology recently published research results touting the benefits of drinking green tea. The researchers concluded that green tea does give defense against periodontal disease.
The study included over nine hundred male subjects aged 49-59. Documenting the periodontal health of subjects who drank more green tea and that of subjects who drank less green tea, researchers concluded that this popular beverage helps promote healthy gums and teeth.
Subjects drinking less green tea revealed signs of periodontal disease. People with periodontal disease experience loss of periodontal pocket depth; loss of gum tissue, and bleeding gums. These periodontal conditions can also be indicative of other health concerns. It has been proven that untreated periodontal disease is a cause of heart disease and diabetes.
More people appear to be drinking green tea today because of its overall health benefits. Only recently did researchers begin to look upon a daily cup of green tea as a link to improved periodontal health. Additional studies may find a direct link between good periodontal health and overall good health.
Loss of gum tissue begins below the gum line and many people do not realize they have a dental health problem until their gums bleed. Regular dental check-ups have always been the secret to protecting yourself against periodontal disease.
