The 2009 Shils Award was given to OralLongevity, a collaboration between GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare (GSKCH), ADA Foundation (ADAF), and the American Dental Association (ADA), for its dedication to maintain and improve the proper oral health of adults.
The award was presented by Dr. Anthony R. Volpe, co-chair of Shils awards and Colgate-Palmolive Co., Global Oral Care, vice president, on June 2, 2009 in Philadelphia. It was received by representatives from the GlaxoSmithKline and ADA Council on Access, Prevention and Interprofessional Relations (CAPIR).
“The program has proven to be very successful,” stated by CAPIR Director Lewis N. Lampiris, “Requests for the materials have been received from dental professionals around the globe. They are being used to train staff in nursing homes and assisted living facilities, and community programs are utilizing the materials at health fairs and other local events focused on heath promotion and wellness. An additional distribution is planned to all dental schools in the country later this summer. The council is honored that the Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Education Fund has recognized this outstanding collaboration between industry and the profession and we also thank GlaxoSmithKline for its continued support of OralLongevity.”
The outreach effort of OralLongevity consists of an educational DVD and a brochure, which features various topics on oral health. The DVD and other resource materials such as case studies, clinical publications and literature reviews can be used by dental professionals in their business offices to help educate care givers and patients. In addition, consumers are provided with fact sheets; questions and answers; and helpful tips as well as access to information regarding implants and dentures, daily oral care, oral cancer, cavities after 60, dry mouth, as well as the effect on health of medications, arthritis and diabetes.
