“Dentists Are Doctors of Oral Health”, is an American Dental Association (ADA) satellite media tour which has reached over 4.5 million viewers and aired 158 times after one month of release.
The satellite media show presents the importance of dentists in the health care team and that they are also trained to diagnose and provide treatment for oral diseases as well as traumatic injury to the jaw, face, and oral cavity. In June 2009, former US Marine Cpl. Jason Poole shared his experience and recovery in radio and television interviews in a Chicago-based studio along with Dr. David Johnson, ADA national spokesperson and oral surgeon. Mr. Poole is one of the victims of the 2004 Iraqi roadside bombing where he suffered from serious facial and head injuries.
At the US Department of Veterans Affairs, general dentists, orthodontists and oral surgeons helped perform eight surgeries to restore Mr. Poole’s orbital bones, mouth, jaw, and face.
According to Dr. Johnson in an interview, dentists played a major role in reconstructing the face of the war veteran. He emphasized that a degree in dentistry requires lengthy and rigorous education and stressed that dentists are the ones responsible for establishing treatment plans to restore or maintain the oral health of their patients; interpreting diagnostic tests and X-rays; monitoring the growth and development of the jaws and teeth; conducting surgical procedures on the bone, teeth, and oral cavity’s soft tissues; and, managing emergency and oral trauma cases.
The satellite media tour sought to educate the public, media, and policy makers regarding the unique abilities of dentists to perform a safe treatment despite the complexities of dental treatments as well as the required education and training to become a dentist.
