Bruxism – otherwise known as teeth grinding – may be a fairly common condition, but for some sufferers it can have serious consequences.
Some of the symptoms include worn-down teeth and tooth enamel, increased tooth sensitivity, headache, earache, jaw pain and insomnia.
The causes of bruxism vary from person to person, though the condition is more common in children under ten, older adolescents and people in their 40s, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Stress, anger and frustration are some of the common emotional triggers. Meanwhile, jaw misalignment, incorrect posture and drug use may be some physical factors that contribute.
Those who suspect they may suffer from bruxism are encouraged to see a dentist, who will perform a complete examination.
Treatment options depend on individual circumstances, but in some cases a custom mouth guard can be fitted to prevent further tooth damage from grinding.
A dentist may also correct misaligned teeth or recommend stress management therapy to treat the condition.
