WKKF Awards ADEA a Grant to Launch Outreach Programs for Dental Schools

by admin on June 2, 2009

A grant has been awarded by the Will Keith Kellogg Foundation to the ADEA or the American Dental Education Association to establish academic-community joint ventures which will provide dental health care to children.

The ADEA/WKKF Dental School Outreach Program will be run by the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry and Howard University College of Dentistry as pilot schools.

“The Dental School Outreach Program builds on the momentum of other ADEA/Kellogg Foundation initiatives,” according to American Dental Education Association President Ronald Hunt. “These programs are now beginning to yield a new group of individuals and institutions committed to the health needs of children.”

The implementation of various outreach programs in the community such as providing dental treatment and screening for the children is the primary goal of the project.

The students who will actively participate in the program will act as role models as well as mentors for the young children. Moreover, the students will also receive a mentoring regarding career information in health professions at this website ExploreHealthCareers.org.

The duration of the grant is 18 months wherein ADEA will be the central program office. The activities of the program will be incorporated into the course objectives associated to the cultural capability of the pilot institutions. To strengthen the programs sustainability, one of its goals is focused on making an impact to other dental schools in the United States to also establish similar outreach activities which will improve the well-being and health of children, especially those who have no access to dental health care.
