Dental Health Begins With The Right Foods

by DPP on March 4, 2009

We all know that avoiding sugary foods is a great way to protect teeth and gums, but do you know what you should be eating to maintain a healthy smile?

Registered dietician Keri Glassman told CBS’ Early Show that foods rich in calcium, magnesium and vitamin C are key to oral health.

The vitamin C found in many common fruits and vegetables helps fight gum disease, while also reducing foul odors, she explained.

Meanwhile, dairy products are an ideal way to make sure you are getting enough calcium and vitamin D, both of which aid with jawbone and tooth development.

Glassman recommended cheese as a handy food to eat in order to neutralize plaque and re-mineralize tooth enamel, while simultaneously increasing the production of saliva to clean the mouth.

For this same reason, she reminded people to remember to drink enough water to keep their mouth properly rinsed.

In addition, the majority of drinking water in the U.S. contains fluoride, which provides an additional benefit to dental health.
